QuestionI have a deifenbach house plant &I would like to know if i could cut the head of the plant off&re:transplant it& if so how to go about it because the head is drupping so mutch im affraid it will snap off. please what should i do. Thank you. Dan
AnswerHi Dan,
Dieffenbachias invariably grow so tall that there stems are no longer strong enough to support them. Some people prop them up with stakes, but that not only looks unattractive, but it is only a temprary solution.
The best solution is what you suggested - to prune it back.
The stem can be pruned at any point without harm to the plant. New growth will emerge on the cut stem just below the point where you make the cut. Thus, it is best to prune as low as possible. That will make for a shorter but more compact plant with plenty of room to grow before it once again needs pruning.
The top portion can be rooted in water or moist potting mix. It is best to remove all but the top 4 to 6 leaves with about 6 inches of bare stem remaining below the lowest leaves. If you put the cutting in its own pot, use a small pot (4 - 6 " diameter) for best results.
Please let me know if any of this is unclear or if you have any additional questions.
