QuestionHi Will,
I have a 6' ficus benjamina that denuded itself a month ago due to improper watering. It is now healthy, putting on new leaves. It has sprouted these small green balls, towards the end of the branches, about the size of pencil erasers. Are these flowers or fruit? What will they look like at maturity? Thanks, Halla
AnswerHi Halla,
Those green balls are berries or fruit. Ficus benjamina is in the fig family, so the berries are related to figs, although they are not edible.
What you see is what you get. They don't get any larger, but they will gradually turn beige and fall off.
I don't know whey some trees bear fruit and others do not. It is not a male/female thing nor is it about pollination. Some trees produce fruit and others do not. Those that do, typically bear fruit once or twice per year.
Please let me know if any of this is unclear or if you have any additional questions.
