QuestionI have a sunroom with a direct eatern exposure. The temerature is 75 -85 and the humidity is low. I like large plants and plants with lots of foliage. Which plants are best susited for this environment? Thanks. RS
AnswerHi Rick,
An eastern exposure is great because it provides at least several hours of direct sun, but avoid the heat and intensity of the afternoon sun.
The temperature range is also ideal for nearly all houseplants, which are of tropical origin and well-suited for warm temps.
Other than some ferns and a few exotic and not very common species, low humidity is not a problem for most houseplants as long as you water a bit more frequently when the humidity is very low during the colder months.
Here are some plants that would do well in your sunroom:
Ficus - nearly all species, including the popular F. benjamina and the large leafed F. Lyrata
Succulents - Cacti, Euphorbias, Ponytail palm, Jade, and ZZ plant
Colorful and/or flowering plants - Croton, Bromeliads, Goldfish plant
Palms - Bamboo palm, Rhapis, Kentia, Areca, Date
Palm-like - Dracaena marginata
Leafy foliage plants - Ming aralias, Schefflera 'Amate', Yucca, Philiodendron selloum
This is not a complete list, by any means. Please let me know if any of this is unclear or if you have any questions.
