Strelitzia nicolai

Question
Hi Darlene -
In my interior plant service, I have 2 White Bird of Paradise.  They are very healthy, about 6 feet tall, don't know age, starting to grow new shoots now from soil.  someone told me they will not flower.  They are in medium light, in a gallery, average warmth.  I want to encourage flowering this spring - what do you suggest.
Thanks!  Halla

Answer
Halla,

Bird of paradise usually won't bloom until the plant is at least 7 years old and root bound.  It sounds like yours could be. However, they need to be in high lighted area. They are native to Hawaii. So think sun, warm, porous well draining soil and high humidity.  Do not let them sit in water for long. If you can't increase the light try putting some spotlights on them with grow light bulbs.  The more light the better.  Good luck.
