orchid strange growth

Question
orchid
orchid
Hi,
I like to grow orchids and get them to re shoot after the first flowers are  finished. Recently I cut down a finished one and after a few weeks Of light watering I noticed that the plant was growing flowers actually inside the the transparent pot, Is this unusual? and how will I deal with it?.  ...Thanks in anticipation...Barry

Answer
Barry, it is unusual for this to occur, but, with the increasing use of clear pots this is more likely than with the use of more traditional pots.  Flowers tend to orient themselves toward the most light. When the plant is potted too deep in a clear pot, the most light comes through the walls of the pot rather than above  the pot.  Repot the plant such that the part giving rise to the flower spike is near or above the top of the pot. In doing so you will need to be careful not to break the flower spike (ie part that bears the flowers) as it likely is brittle. This should help the flowers to open more normally (although probably not perfectly as would be the case when the budding starts above the pot).
