QuestionWhen I received my orchid the florist had covered the abundant roots with moss and decorative rocks. I read that the roots prefer to "breathe" so should I remove these materials to promote the plant's health?
AnswerThanks for your question Laura. You are right about orchid roots wanting to breathe. However, the spaces between the rocks should allow enough air through to keep the roots healthy. I am more concerned about the moss which tends to compact over time therefor may hold too much moisture and restrict air movement. If there is just a bit of moss on the surface and it is loose, that should be okay. You need not take action now, but, if, in the next few months, you observe any yellowing of the leaves, that is a sign of poor root health. If that happens, I would repot it in a pot with standard orchid potting mix in a well drained pot.
