QuestionMy orchid finished blooming a long time ago and has had small sets of leaves growing from the top of both of the stems where the blooms came from. They are now looking sick with limp leaves. Can these be cut off and replanted or is this plant doomed?
Ginger
AnswerGinger, the parent plant is suffering from root rot if its leaves are limp. Locate a source of commercially produced orchid potting mix (may be available at Home Depot or Lowes garden centers or other garden outlets). If you repot, you need to be sure that the new pot has lots of drainage holes and, when you remove the plant from its pot, remove all roots that are mushy and have collapsed-- these are dead. Be sure the fresh potting mix has fir bark particles and soak it thoroughly prior to use. You will need at least one good root to repot.
With regard to the leaves at the top of the old flower spike, these are baby orchid plants but need both good roots and leaves (2-3 inches in length) before they are ready to be potted up. If you cut them off before they are mature enough, they will not survive.
