QuestionFirst, I have one who was in full bloom when I bought her from Lowes. Potted in BetterGro Orchid bark. She has looked great, even roots until last night/ this morning when we noticed almost all of her flowers (8 out of her 12) have wilted very fast and 2 fallen off. She has one main spike and a secondary growth on that spike. The spike part of the later growth looks good but the flowering part of the main spike is shriveling up, and very quickly. Have another that I bought at the Grocery. Potted in MiracleGro Orchid potting mix. Looked great until a couple days ago, lost most flowers at once, now spike is shriveling up. We cut it and put some cinnamon on to protect it but it has continued to shrivel. Also lost a couple small leaves toward bottom of plant. And yet another plant who has two spikes. Also came from Lowes. Planted in 50/50 mix MiracleGro Orchid potting mix & BetterGro Orchid bark. A couple flowers wilting on one of them and something is leaking from the 2nd to end node on the same spike. This spike has secondary growth that seems to be doing okay as well as another spike that seems great. I can send pics if that will help... Help would be much appreciated! Thanks!
AnswerThank you Amy. Glad to hear you repotted these plants as soon as you did. The plants should do well with fresh mix. Repotting while in flower, however, can lead to early flower drop because the established root connections are disturbed by repotting. However, a poor potting mix can lead to loss of the plant, so, loss of flowers is, in the log run, better than loss of the plant.
Not all phalaenopsis are alike. Some old flower spikes are genetically programmed to die back.
Plants may exude a clear sticky plant sap. It is sticky because it contains sugars carried by the plant to various tissues. At times, these may leak through pores in the plant tissue. This is in normal. The main problem with the leakage of sap is that it can attract ants and other critters fond of sugar.
