QuestionWhen I bought my orchid it had 3 beautiful and full stems of flowers. The flowers have since fallen off and I cut the stems down, like I have done with my other types of orchids. I am seeing new growth on the orchid, 3 new clusters of leaves, but the leaves from the old bulbs/stem areas are continuing to die off. Is this normal? I am trying to follow the directions by letting it go dry between watering in the winter but now that it is getting warmer in Virginia Beach VA, I have decided to move it outside. How often should I water it now, or was I not watering it enough and that's the reason why the leaves were falling off? Thank you for your help as I really don't want this expensive plant to die.
AnswerAshley, loss of old leves is not unusual. The pseudobulbs losing the leaves will help support the new growth. Since you have new growth coming, you may want to repot the plant in fresh fir bark based orchid potting mix. Soak the fresh potting mix prior to use and discard the old potting mix. New cymbidium growth needs lots of water and plant food. The reason I suggest repotting is that old potting mix retains too much moisture and doesn't allow enough aeration of the roots. I recommend watering at least once per week, feeding it with EACH WATERING.
