QuestionI have inherited a orchid and brought it home, the flower died off as usual and I fed it and now it has another plant growing out of the top of the stalk and is now growing roots. What should I do, cut it and see it starts to grow or see if the siamese grows a flower out of the top one. Thanks.
AnswerBarbara, the plantlet growing on the old flower spike is called a keiki. You may remove it and pot it up in fresh orchid seedling potting mix as soon as the leaves are at least three inches long. Avoid damaging the roots when you remove it. Try to remove it by gently twisting it at the point of attachment to the old flower spike. If you wish, you can allow the keiki to continue to grow as is, and it may actually flower while attached to the parent plant.
Remember to repot the parent plant in a commercially available fir bark based orchid potting mix after each flowering. If you elect to remove the keiki, wait until it is removed before repotting the parent plant.
