Orchid leaves appear waterlogged

Question

Hello,

I have a feeling this orchid has been over-watered.  The leaves look as though they are waterlogged and rotting.  In the last day or so, there is a spotty fungal looking material appearing on the leaves.  Can you advise on what this might be, what I've done to this poor plant and if it's fixable?!  It appears that all of the leaves are effected.

Thanking you.

Answer
Poppy, I can't tell much from your picture as one half of the leaf appears to have a reflection-- possibly from a flash on your camera.  But, your description bears further investigation. I recommend that you unpot your plant and checks the roots.  Rotting roots are mushy and, sometimes, stringy. Healthy roots are firm. If you have some healthy roots, this plant should be repotted in a fir-bark based or other special orchid potting mix.  Before repotting, be sure to cut off all of the dead roots. These plants should be potted in a well drained pot which should not sit in water. The potting mix should be fairly coarse (pieces about 2cm in diameter). The condition you described can occur if the plant is exposed to cold but is noy limited to that condition.  If you find that most of the roots are mushy, chances or rescuing the plant diminish greatly.
