QuestionOur orchid is growing a new leaf at the top of the plant instead of the bottom. Is that a problem?
AnswerKelly, if you have a phalaenopsis orchid, and the new leaf is on the old flower spike, this is not unusual. Sometimes these leaves, which develop on a node (ie joint) on the old flower spike, may proceed to develop roots as well. If, and when, this happens, when the roots and leaves are two-three inches long, you may separate the new plantlet from the old flower spike and pot it up as a separate plant. These separate plantlets are called keikis and are clones of the mother plant.
