Orchid-Frostbitten

Question
I left my phal orchid outside while I went away for the weekend and the temperatures got very chilly that weekend (around 35 degrees F). When I returned all the leaves, including the new leaf that was growing, have turned soft, mushy, and wrinkly. Is there any chance that it will survive? If so, please let me know what I can do. It was SO healthy and growing great just last week.

Thank you so much!

Answer
Jaclyn, I can't say there is no hope, but, I would characterize it as slim hope. Phalaenopsis need temperatures above 55 degree; how well they tolerate cooler temperatures depends upon length of time they are at those cooler temperatures. Another factor is whether the potting mix is damp-- especially if you watered before you left. Damp and cool for phalaenopsis spells root rot. You can expect the leaves to fall off.  If they don't, that is a good sign. Keep the potting mix dry and warm. Do not water. You may also see if repotting in a dry potting mix might eventually promote recovery.
