Questionhow can i culture reproduce my own orchids?
AnswerTony, it depends upon which orchids you have. A few types of orchids can produce new plants from canes or old flower spikes. Notable among these are phalaenopsis and some dendrobiums. These plants produce plantlets at nodes (ie joints) which contain meristemmatic tissue. Mass production of orchids, however, require either seed culture or the culture of meristemmatic tissue. Of the two latter types, seed culture is the technically least challenging. Still, either method requires sterile culture and specialized germinating and growth media. The steps, chemicals involved, timing of steps, etc are much too involved to elaborate on them here. The late Rebecca Tyson Northen has written a book called "Home Orchid Growing" which contains a much more detailed description of these approaches.
