milky subtance

Question
My Philanopsis has a sticky, milky colored drainage coming from the flowers. Can you tell me what it is?

Answer
Ro, you are observing plant sap leaking from the tissue.  Plant sap serves the same purpose as blood does in animals-- it carries nutrients to the plant.  It is sticky because it contains a lot of sugar. The flowers are supported by green tissue which controls the flow of sap through the veins in the flower. If the sap pressure it too high for the flower condition, it may be forced through the tissue to the surface.  There are times when tiny sucking insects infests the plant and create "holes" in the plant tissue from which they draw sap and sap may leak from these created pores.  The latter is not very uncommon and the insects, although tiny, can be detected.
