QuestionHi I bought a new moth orchid and left my moth orchid in the car for an hour or so and all the flowers wilted, everything else looks fine, is there something I should do? And I was wondering do I cut off the wilting flowers? And if I do where? Just above the base of the flower or the flower and the stem? thanks
AnswerDuran, I would first check the condition of the potting mix. If it seems soil-like and tend to remain damp, you need to repot your plant in fresh orchid potting mix. That potting mix shoud contain damp fir bark particles (about 1-1.5 cm in diameter). If a commercial grade of orchid potting mix is available, use one that has some particles this size. Orchid potting mix may also contain osmunda, tree fern particles, perlite, sponge rock, etc to help with air flow and moisture retention. This is a process you should use after each flowering. Use a pot with lots of drainage holes. Whether or not you choose to repot, cut the flower spike off just above the second joint (ie) node. Depending upon the parentage of your plant, the old flower spike may remain green or turn brown. If it remains green, it may send off a branch from the node just below your cut. Be sure to grow your plant in a semishaded location (avoid prolonged exposure to direct sun and maintain the temperature at 20-30 degrees C.. If you repot, you may safely water thoroughly once per week. They do well with high humidity. Be sure not to get water in the crown of the plant (ie where the leaves originate).
