QuestionI would like to know how do I procude to make a tip of a phalaenopsis in a new plant? Which hormones, and which fungi culture?
Thank you
AnswerThanks for your question Mona. The flower spike on some phalaenopsis orchids remains green after flowering. The node (ie joint) on these old spikes can be induced to produce new plants called keikis. These develop roots and leaves from the node and can be separated from the node when leaves are 2-3 inches in length and roots have developed. Often these new plants can develop with a change to lower light levels (such as a dark room or semidark room) for a week or two. Another option is to obtain some node paste (a plant hormone incorporated into a gel). The node cover is removed from the node leaving bare the meristemmatic tissue upon which the gel is placed and the resulting plant is again placed in a dark room as described earlier. if you wish to use the node paste you may need to google it to see who carries it. You could also check a web site titled "The Orchid Mall" to see if there are vendors there that carry it. Fungal culture is an old technique used to stimulate seed germination in terrestrial orchids. It still occurs in nature, but modern orchid culture techniques are able to provide the necessary nutrients in sterile culture of orchid seed in the laboratory. The use of sterile culture to germinate and grow orchid seed is far more difficult and time consuming.
