orchid spikes

Question
There is one long spike coming out of my plant. The flowers have died and fell off, do I need to cut it back?I dont want to do the wrong thing and have my orchid die.

Answer
Tracy, basically, there is no wrong way to treat an old flower spike.  Some flower spikes just die back naturally, whereas, some remain green.  For the latter group you may cut off the flower spike just above the second or third node (ie joint) counting from the base of the spike up.  If you elect the latter, you may get a side branch that may form buds and flowers.

Also, keep in mind the recommended practice of repotting your plant in fresh orchid potting mix after each flowering.  If you are unfamiliar with repotting, let me know and I'll walk you through the steps.
