Phal

Question
Hi. I recieved a deep purple Phal as a home warming present a few months ago. at the time it had about 6 flowers. ever since i kept loosing a flower every 10 days till about a few days ago. and then the whole thing dried up and even what was once its dark green leaves started falling out. I don't know what went wrong although i watered it every 3 days and kept it in indirect light like i should. is it dead? Is there anything at all i could do to revive it? i really love this plant and i don't want to fail it. is it too late?

Answer
It sounds like you over watered it for the type of potting mix it is in.  If there still is at least one leaf in good condition, I recommend that you obtain a hobby bag of fir-bark based orchid potting mix.  You should repot it to a plastic pot with lots of drainage holes.  Soak the new orchid potting mix before use while you unpot your plant. Rinse off the plant's roots and you will note that many of the roots are mushy.  These are rotted and need to be removed before repotting.  Healthy roots are firm and turn green when wet.  Repot in an area where the wet, fresh potting mix can drain freely as you add it to the pot with the healthy roots.  Then move the repotted plant to your growing area. Do not water for a week-- then water once per week.  Home Depot or Lowes Garden Centers usually have orchid potting mix.  Choose the coarse kind.  Phalaenopsis orchids need to grow in a potting mix that is well drained and allows air to pass through.
