QuestionMy orchid only bloomed for about 2 months after purchasing it. One by one all the blooms wilted and fell off. Now the stem is turning yellowish brown and looks like it too will die off. The leaves are still beautiful and healthy looking. I do not feel I am watering the plant too much and let it drain thoroughly after each watering. I keep the plan in my kitchen about 6-8 feet from a protected south window. Perhaps it is not getting adequate light, but I have read and been told if you can read a newspaper where the plant is located, the light is adequate. What should I do now to keep my orchid alive and hopefully bloom again?
AnswerJoyce, the bloom spike naturally dies back on many phalaenopsis hybrids. You can cut it off. It does not mean anything is wrong with the plant. These plants, when well grown, will rebloom next year on a new flower spike. I think your growing is fine at this time, but it is generally desirable to repot the plant in fresh orchid potting mix after each flowering.
