Phal with pink stem

Question
A couple weeks ago my phalaenopsis dropped its last flower. I cut the flower spike down about halfway and covered the cut with cinnamon to prevent bacterial infection. Now the stem Is a creamy yellow at the top that fades into pink at the bottom. I'm pretty certain that's not supposed to happen.

Answer
Melissa, the genetic differences between phals also applies to old flower spikes.  Some plants retain their green spikes.  If you have this type, by cutting the old flower spike above a node, the old flower spike could branch and rebloom.  However, some types of phalaenopsis do not have this genetic condition.  The latter type will have its flower spike die back.   It sounds as if you have this latter type.  In this case, cutting off the flower spike above a node will not prevent it from continue to die back. This latter type will only bloom on new flower spikes.
