My Leopard Prince Orchid

Question
I think this guy has some root rot or something not good.  I bought this orchid in December and the flowers have been in bloom until this month. then the black dot on the top leaf has grown dramatically. In The last month about 5 flowers have died off and the center of the plant has some black/brown in it. I watered it once every week for months using Schultz liquid plant food. Then I switched to miracle grow orchid food. and soaked just the soil (all that spongy moss stuff). It seemed to all happen at the beginning of April when it started going down hill. If there is root rot is it to late or should I replant. I have bark chips and moss on standby. It was super strong now it looks like its dying and I wanna save it. Please help

Answer
Thanks for your question Ed.  You definitely should repot it.  Use commercial grade orchid potting mix containing some fir bark.  Skip the moss and fir bark alone is not as beneficial as the commercial potting mix.  Be sure to soak the new potting mix prior to use as dry fir bark repels water and soaking it will reduce  that repellency. Once you have the fresh potting mix soaking, unpot your plant and rinse off the roots.  You will probably find some roots that are mushy and/or stringy.  Remove these roots before repotting.  Healthy roots are firm.  Be sure to use only a pot that has lots of drainage holes for repotting. Place the healthy roots into the pot and add the wet, new potting mix, tapping the sides of the pot as you add it.  Set the pot aside to drain before returning it to your growing area.  Do not water for at least a week.  After that you may water once per week.  Do not fertilize for at least a month and then only at 1/4 tsp per gallon of room temp water.  It sounds as if the plant has been kept too wet in the roots zone so try to grow it a bit drier.
