withering leaves on moth orchids

Question
why is my orchids leaves going all soft and withering ? i dont over water.

Answer
Jane, it is likely that your orchid has root rot.  You will need to repot it in fresh orchid potting mix in a pot that has lots of drainage holes-- and hope that it is not too late.  Many, perhaps most, orchid plants that are purchased from mass marketers are in orchid potting mix that has deteriorated.  Such plants may be in flower but are destined to "go downhill".  Orchids need an annual repotting in fresh fir-bark based potting mix-- usually after each flowering.  In some cases, however, a plant may need an emergency repotting.  Locate  some of the orchid potting mix-- possibly where you obtained the orchid.  Soak it while unpotting your plant. discard the old potting mix and rinse off the roots of your plant.  Remove any roots that are mushy as these are dead.  Dead roots cannot supply leaves with the needed materials to maintain their health.  Because a withering leaf has lost its source of nutrients, it is likely to die.  By repotting your plant into a plastic pot with lots of drainage holes you are giving it an opportunity to grow new roots and leaves. After repotting, provide your plant with ample light and water it once per week.  Do not let the pot sit in water.  A plant in degraded potting mix absorbs and holds water like a sponge and reduces air circulation to the roots (in nature the roots grow exposed to the sir).  A good, fresh orchid potting mix will allow both air and water to flow freely through the mix and you needn't be concerned about overwatering.
