Re-potting my orchids

Question
Hi! I have a phal orchid that has never been re-potted since I got it about 2.5 yrs ago. The plant gets plenty of light, water and food, and seems to be doing alright for the most part. In the last few weeks, as I was planning to re-pot it, I noticed that the roots were growing like crazy- they are now out of the pot and almost 6-8 inches long. Also, my plant has grown 4 flower spikes and has buds on it! I think the potting medium might have broken down (it seems a little soft)after so long, but I'm scared to change the medium now while the plant is budding. Should I wait until the blooming is done? What should I do? I'd appreciate any help on this. Thanks a lot!

Answer
I would wait to repot it until after flowering.  In the meantime, go light on the watering.  I would withhold watering until the potting mix is nearly dry.  With the potting mix as degraded as it is, it will tend to remain too wet after watering. Roots tend to grow out of the pot to overcome the restriction of air flow and excess moisture in the pot. For now, your growing appears to be superior for the conditions and I would stay with that.  Thanks Chandana for your question.
