orangeish stem

Question
QUESTION: I Have An Orchard My Boyfriend But For me Over The Summer. Thought It Was Doing Good it started gowing another stem and looks like its ready to bloom, but the original stem that was there when i got it which its flowers are just now falling off, the stem is turning like an orange color. does that mean something is wrong????

ANSWER: Jamie, it is natural for the old flower spike to die back, which is starting to happen.  When that happens you can just cut it off near the plant where it originated.

You may not be aware that phalaenopsis (moth) orchids should be repotted in fresh orchid poting mix after each flowering.  Since you have a new flower spike, this is not the best time to do the repotting. If you have not repotted an orchid before, let me know when you are ready to repot and I'll walk you through the process.

QUESTION: When i cut the stem should i do it at the bottom or where its dead and do i cut it slanted or straight acrosss???

Answer
You can try cutting it straight across just above a node (ie joint) on the green part of the spike just below where it is turning an orange color. If the spike continues to turn brown below your cut just continue to cut it above the next node down.  This may progress until the entire spike has turned. At that point, cut it straight across where the spike originates on the plant.
