2-inch Mini Phalaenopsis

Question
Hi Wayne, I have another question(s) for you :)

I just bought two of these mini orchids as a present for my mom, each are potted in 2-inch clay pots with no drainage hole at the bottom. The potting medium is sphagnum moss.

I am having alot of trouble finding 2-inch pots with drainage, since this size is tiny. I am afraid the orchid will drown since their present pot has no drainage. What are my options?

The last question I have about these is, since the potting medium is moss, would I be able to use bark for the medium at some point in time? Or would I have to stick with sphagnum moss?

Thanks so much for your help.

Answer
Thanks for your questions Diana.  If you are handy with a drill, you could try drilling one or two small holes near the bottom of the clay pot.  Another oprtion, is to find some small plastic cups such as might hold pudding, jello, etc..  You can punch holes in the bottom of these and use them to pot your seedlings. You should transition you seedlings from moss to seedling bark and perlite.  Initially, you can use a mixture of moss and seedling bark, but I would transition over to perlite and seedling bark using more of the perlite to replace the moss.  Some place the seedling pots on a heating pad, but just try to keep them warm.  Humidity is important for seedlings as they should not be permitted to dry out completely
