QuestionI have a phal that is getting what looks like a baby between two leaves. What do I do with it?I also have a couple other kinds that are getting keiki's all over them.Should I remove them? Are they slowing or stopping growth? Thank you
AnswerTina, part of the answe to yout question depends upon the size of the mother plant. If it has at least three leaves, then it is fine to let the keikis grow as the parent should be strong enough to support one or more keikis without being weakened. Adult plants also have a way of telling you whether they can grow keikis. Keikis are naturally slow growing and, the smaller the mother plant, the slower the keiki growth. Sometimes, when there is more than one keiki, others may never mature or just dry up. This you will only know as time passes. I would not remove any keikis until their leaves are at least two inches long and there is active root growth (active keiki root tips are green). The growth between two leaves should just be permitted to mature. Only then can you know whether it is a flower spike or a new leaf.
