QuestionThe stalks of my Phalaenopsis is turning yellow..I have had this orchid for 6 months and it is gorgeous. It has done really well until now..I am just really concerned about the yellow/brown ends..it actually looks like it is dying at the ends.
The bottom leaves are also looking a bit wilted...as if they will turn yellow. I am not too concerned about this, as I have lost bottom leaves before and it did not affect the plant.
I would appreciate any advice..my plant is in good light and I spray it every second day.
Thank you
AnswerEsthea, I assume the "stalks" to which you refer are old flower spikes that previously held the flowers. Some phalaenopsis hybrids naturally have their flower spikes die back (just as many plants). You may cut off the flower spike where it joins the plant. Future flowering will come from new flower spikes next year.
To keep your plant healthy and ensure good future flowering I recommend that you repot your orchid in standard orchid potting mix in a new plastic pot with lots of drainage holes. Phalaenopsis orchid potting mix usually contains fir bark which should be soaked while you are unpotting your plant. Rinse off the plant roots. If any are mushy they should be removed as they are rotting and no new growth can arise from them and those leaves served by these roots will probably turn yellow and be lost. Repot the good, healthy roots which are firm and turn green when wet. Place theem into the pot and add the wet, new, orchid potting mix, tapping the side of the pot as you add it. Set the plant aside to drain before you place it into your growing area.
