QuestionHello, Thank You for taking the time to answer my question. I am new to Orchids and my Moth Orchid petals are "Closing or Folding Up" . Does this in fact mean my Orchid is dying off? Thank You Georgina
AnswerGeorgina, the flowering period is done but the orchid plant is not dying. You can cut the flower spike off above a node (ie joint) in the flower spike. After each flowering, your orchid should be repotted in fresh orchid potting mix. Wet the mix for an hour while you remove the plant from its pot. Rinse off the plant roots and remove any roots that are mushy. Healthy roots are firm and turn green when wet. Repot to a plastic pot with lots of drainage holes in the bottom. Lower the roots into the new pot and gradually add the new wet potting mix, tapping the sides of the pot to settle the mix about the roots. When finished, set the pot aside to drain for 24 hours. Do not water for a week and then water once per week after moving it to its growing area. Be sure the orchid potting mix you use has a lot of fir bark in it for good drainage.
