QuestionHi please i need help about my orchid
My husband brought me a phalaenopsis orchid about 1 month ago. Its container is a glass one planted with small decorative stones. I have been advised to water it twice a week. From the second week its blooms started dying. In 1 month all of its blooms died. Its leaves became yellow now they are dying one by one. I have 2 leaves left, no blooms though... Please I need advice...
AnswerKaterina, you need to obtain some orchid potting mix and a suitably sized plastic pot with 4-6 drainage holes. Remove the plant from its pot and rinse off the roots. Remove any roots that are mushy or stringy as these are dead. Healthy roots are firm and turn green when wet. Soak the fir-bark based orchid potting mix for an hour before use. Place the plant with its healthy roots in the plastic pot and add the now wet fresh orchid potting mix tapping the pot as you add it so it settles about the roots. Set the plant in its new pot and potting mix aside to drain and water only once per week. The mix should nearly dry out between waterings. You need to do this as soon as possible to avoid further root rot. If you are able to accomplish this, it may take a month or more before you have new root and leaf growth so be patient.
