phalinopsis

Question
When my phal finished its second bloom in a row, I cut the stalk off at its base.
Should I have removed the faded blooms and left the stalk? Would it have eventually bloomed again from the old stalk?

Thanks so much for your advice!

Answer
Nancy, the flower spike on some phalaenopsis will turn brown and die back and should be removed as the plant will not rebloom on it.  The flower spike on other phalaenopsis can remain green and may rebloom on the old flower spike when the spike is cut back to just above a node (ie joint) in the spike.  Regardless of type, a plant may send up a new flower spike in the next bloom season.
