QuestionI have two moth orchids, one planted in a bark and I just purchased a new one that is planted in a moss spongy like material. The one in bark needs to be repotted but im not sure which is best for the soil. The moss always remains wet/moist on top and im not sure if this is good or bad.
Also, the plastic pot it is in only has a few wholes in the bottom and none on the sides and I was wondering if that is ok or not.
Thank you so much!
AnswerThanks for your question Amanda. You should use a commercial orchid potting mix that contains some fir bark. Most places that carry orchids should have hobby bags of it. I have always found it at Lowes or Home Depot garden centers and the two brands are "Better Gro" and "Schultz". Always give the fresh mix a good soaking prior to use as fir bark, when dry, repels water and will take water away from the roots rather than making it available. I have not found moss to be a good long-term potting mix, primarily because it can compact over time restricting air flow to the roots. It is good to repot after each flowering to give the new growth the best possible environment for vigorous growth. A plastic pot should have at least five to six holes in the base and the more, the better.
