Question
Orchid Species
This is a species I purchased from an orchid show about 5 years ago from a South American vendor. It has bloomed for three years in a row but I have lost the tag, not doubt from the hurricanes we experienced a couple of years back. Attached is a photo. Please Advise.
AnswerMary, thanks for your puzzler. Do you know if this species is native to South America? That would help to narrow it down. If we can determine the genus, that would be a start. It looks a little like a Bulbophyllum but detail on the shape of the pseudobulb is missing. If you could send one of more pictures as a file attachment to my e-mail address (
[email protected]), I can forward it to some species experts I know who might have a recollection. Unfortunately, if it is a Bulbophyllum, there are hundreds of species. Also, do you remember which orchid dealer in South America you purchased it from? They would have the best possibility of identifying it. If you can't remember the name of the dealer, maybe you can remember what country they were from. I know a number of orchid dealers in South America, but, if the dealer was from another country, seeling at a n orchid fair in South America, that could be a problem.
