How to propagation my orchid

Question
I have several Phalaenopsis. I want propagation my plant for fun.  Please tell me what should I do. I am appreciative of your great help.

Hong

Answer
Hong, the simplest way to propagate phalaenopsis orchids is to produce Keikis from nodes of a flower spike. Keikis are plantlets that develop from nodes (joints) in a flower spike.  These may arise naturally but can also be induced by removing the sheath at a joint on the flower spike and applying a node paste which contains appropriate hormones to initiate keiki growth at the node. This node paste is available commercially.

Obviously, there are other ways of propagating phalaenopsis. These involve more complex processes and may take longer.  One way is by fertilizing a phalaenopsis flower and producing a seed pod and growing the seed in sterile culture.  This involves a knowledge of the floral parts and how to accomplish pollination.  Once you have a seed pod, you will need to have special culture media and knowledge of sterile technique to grow the seed and then transplant the seedlings to special growth media-- again under sterile conditions.  A still more technically challenging way to propogate, is meristem culture.  It also involves sterile technique but requires even more know how and materials to produce the clones and grow them in sterile culture media.

My recommendation is to start with propogation from Keikis and, when you have mastered that, move on to production and growth from seed. See if you can locate a copy of the late Rebecca Tyson Northen's book titled "Home Orchid Growing".  It is a good place to start learning and she discusses the propagation of orchids in much more detail then I can go into here.
