QuestionI have two different phals one the label says it a Spotted deer the other says sun beauty. The Spotted deer two of the leaves have patches of yellow mixed with brown on them this occurs an only one side of the orchid. The sun beauty has a black ring on one of the leaves almost as if it has been burnt.
I live in Jamaica and they are both in home made bamboo pots with a tree bark based medium. Please help.
AnswerRamona, here are several potential causes for the condition of your phalaenopsis: Exposure to the sun, deteriorated potting mix, keeping them too wet, insufficient drainage of the potting mix, viral infection.
Your pot should have lots of drainage holes in the bottom. I recommend a repotting in fresh orchid potting mix. When you remove a plant from its pot in the process of repotting, rinse its roots after removal. You will proabably find several mushy roots. These are decayed and should be removed before repotting. The presence of mushy roots could be one cause of your plants' condition. While some orchids can take direct sun, phalaenopsis are shade loving and can get burned by the sun as you suggested. If the black ring is a ring and not a spot, it may reflect a virus infection. There is no cure for orchid virus infections.
After you repot these plants and make the recommended adjustments, it is likely that you will lose those leaves with yellow/brown patches. With fresh orchid potting mix, the plants may still recover and grow new leaves.
