QuestionI received a mounted Sedirea for Christmas last year. I did good with it as it got three new leaves and a lot of new aerial roots. Then about 2 months ago a couple of leaves starting turning yellow and falling off. I took the plant off of the mount yesterday and all the roots under the spag moss were dead. I have a LOT of healthy aerial roots but only two leaves left and one is turning yellow I am sure I watered it way too much. How can I save this plant? Will it live with only one leaf or NO leaves if this one dies? I really need help as this was a gift from my daughter in law and would love to keep it alive. Thank you so much for your help.
AnswerHello Sharon,
I apologize for taking so long to respond to your question but I've been running back and forth to the hospital to monitor the care of my mother.
From your description on the condition of the Sedirea, I'm afraid it does not look promising. But, let's give it a try.
Stop watering it for now, but lightly mist the exposed aerial roots to help keep them alive. Remove the entire plant from the pot and clean off the sphag moss. Cut off any roots that are soft and mushy as they are dead and of no use. If the last remaining leafs have yellowed and fallen off, that is okay for now. In a large plastic bag place several barely moist paper towels then put what is left of the Sedirea in and close the bag. Put it in an area that has bright shade and temperatures remain above 60F. Hopefully, after 4 to 8 weeks or slightly longer you will see some new growth beginning, if there are continue to keep it in the bag. Once the new growths have several roots over 2 inches long you can remove it and put it in a small pot of its own with a little potting media (preferably orchid bark rather than moss).
Hope this works in saving it! Good luck. \
