QuestionHello! i have a moth orchid and it had not bloomed in over a year but i was not fertilizing it. i started to fertilize it with a urea free fert and it has just started blooming now at the end of sept (which i read is NOT blooming season)i am not sure if i should continue to fertilize it while it is blooming ?or stop.
thank you- amanda
AnswerAmanda, unlike some orchids, the phalaenopsis grows year around and can be fed weakly weekly all year. Weakly means 1/4 tsp per gallon. While most phals bloom in the spring, many can bloom at other times of the year. Things that can influence blooming are day length, use of a bloom booster (eg 10/30/10), or a drop in temperature. You can continue to fertilize your plant on a weakly weekly basis. Don't neglect repotting when it has finished blooming. That helps to ensure that your roots stay healthy, which is the basis for growing a stronger plant for next year.
