QuestionIt's me again and I don't mind telling you how much I appreciate you two answering questions, because I seem to have a lot of them.
I have a cattleya orchid that has just bloomed so I guess it's doing ok. My question is the pseudobulbs are pretty wrinkly and some of the leaves have little black specs on them. I have noticed a couple of leaves aren't quite as "stiff" as they have been and seem to be a little rippled. Almost like they are dying. Could all this be due to the leaf being old? One is turning yellow.
AnswerCheryl, you are welcome. Questions are the food that feeds learning. Keep asking. Your plant is likely going into a rest period. Watering should be greatly reduced to once every two weeks with some misting in between. It is natural for pseudobulbs to wrinkle and for leaves to be lost- especially the older ones. It sounds like your plant may have root rot, probably from an old potting mix plus overwatering. As soon as there is any sign of new growth you need to repot the plant in an orchid potting mix (usually containing fir bark and other ingredients.). Be sure to wet the mix thoroughly before use and use rhizome clips and/or bamboo stakes to secure the cattleya in its pot. A clay pot is preferred for Cattleyas.
