QuestionI am looking for a black orchid with reed-like foliage. Is there such a plant? What is it's common name? I THINK I saw one a few years ago but I can not remember where I was at the time.
AnswerBarry, Cymbidiums and Maxillaria have reed like foliage but I'm not aware of any that are close to black. On the other hand there is a species called Coelogyne pandurata that has often been referred to as the black orchid. Its leaves, however are both broad and long. Most recently, a hybrid named Fredclarkara (FDK) After Dark has been made at Sunset Valley Orchids (SVO)in California by Fred Clark. That hybrid is truly black and the first of its kind. I have seen photos of that hybrid in the caatasetum alliance and it is spectucular. Contact SVO for detail on the the specific cross and price
