QuestionI have a phalenopsis that was doing great until I repoted it and now the leaves are very droopy and shriveled up but still green. It has a strange sticky substance on the under side of the leaves. When repotting I used a clay airiated pot, Better Gro special potting mix, I trimmed of the dead roots and it looked like it had plenty of healthy roots left on it. All my other orchids have between 5 and 20 flowers. How can I save my orichd? Thanks Tammie
AnswerTammie, it sounds as if you may be growing the plant too dry. Clay pots can suck the moisture out of the potting mix, leaving the roots too dry. Better Gro Phalaenopsis potting mix is quite dry and needs to be thoroughly soaked before use. The plant should be repotted into a plastic pot with lots of air holes in the bottom. The sticky substance is undoubtedly plant sap. Some insects may cause this such as aphids. I would take a cotton swab and soak it in rubbing alcohol and clean all of the plant sap from the underside of the leaves. If there are any insects there, this will kill them.
