Questioni just purchased a mini moth orchid. it is in a ceramic pot but i just realized
the roots and potting medium are actually in a plastic pocket-type thing with
holes for drainage and thennnnnn put into the pot. i think i could easily slide
it out roots and all. should i? im new to orchids, i mostly do houseplants, succulents and veggies, stuff thats pretty low maintenance in san diego. also
my leaves are really nice looking but on one side they curl a bit more then
others. is that just normal? maybe from when it was shipped? thanks!
AnswerHello Fiona,
Yes, take it out of the ceramic pot, especially if it does not have drainage holes in the bottom.
San Diego is one of the best places to grow orchids! The climate there is almost ideal year round but with an occasional cold spell in winter when they may need some protection from the elements.
Your phalaenopsis can be grown near the houseplants but will need slightly different care - especially the cactus! (grin)
Place it where it will receive bright shade, temperatures between 60F to 85F, humidity above 50% and some light air movement around it. Water when the potting media becomes barely moist.
A slightly curled leaf may or may not be a problem, time will tell which it is. If the leaf continues to curl and become limp, that could be an indication of some problem needing your attention. Hopefully it just remains with a slight curl.
Hope this helped.
