QuestionMy Cane orchid is a little over 3 years old and blooms several time a year. It is "resting" now, but it had grown so tall and big, I'm wondering if I can safely prune it. It lives on our lanai in Florida and gets plenty of shaded light. It is watered infrequently and receives no special attention. Any suggestion? Thank you!!
AnswerRosemary, I assume your "cane" orchid is a dendrobium. There are many different hybrids that could, therefore, respond differently to pruning. I suggest you top a couple of the tallest canes. Cut them off above a node (ie) joint in the cane. Observe the results over the course of a month or so. If all goes well you could do the same with several other canes. It is possible that you could get new plants forming at the node-- called keikis. If that happpens, when the keikis are far enough along, you may remove them and pot them up and give them to friends. Congratulations on good growing. There are lots of orchid growers who would like to have your problem.
