out-of-season phalaenopsis orchids

Question
I have two phalaenopsis orchid plants, a white flower and a yellow and pink flower, well, the flowers on my white one have fallen off and now the stem is brown and dead but the leafs are still green. Is there anything I can do to help it or is it just out of season? My other one, the yellow and pink one, the flowers have fallen off but the stem and leafs are still green, can you help me? By the way I live in Florida, so could the hot weather have something to do with it?
                 Thank you,
                     Brittany

Answer
Brittany, you have an example of the genetic diveristy in phalaenopsis. Some hybrids (depending upon parentage) come from species that lose their flower spikes after flowering.  Others come from species where the flower spike stays green after flowering.  Phalaenopsis have a flowering season and that season is just ending.  The recommended procedure after a plant is done flowering is to repot it in fresh orchid potting mix.  When you unpot, check the roots and remove any that are mushy.  Wet your fresh potting mix before use as it usually comes quite dry.  In the months following repotting, your plant should put on strong new leaf and root growth  for next year's flowering.
