orchid revival

Question
I have an orchid at work which I treated with benign neglect (save for some VERY sporadic watering) and it flowered and lasted for a while and finally the flowers shriveled up and died.  It has been sitting on my window sill for months and I was about to throw it away and salvage the clay pot but when I turned it around I noticed foliage growing at the base of the plant. Two separate growths, one about 2 inches tall. As for the type of growth, imagine your hands, palms together simulating a growing plant and if you open your hands, more growth would be coming up from the middle (is that in any way clear?)  Do I have chance with this plant?  should I cut down the old original stalk which is dried out any woody, or is this all just false hope?  Thanks.

Answer
It sounds as if you have a phalaenopsis orchid.  If so, you may cut the old flower spike back and grow the new plants on to get lare enough to flower.  This is not false hope but I recommend you repot your plant into a smaller pot in orchid potting mix.  A plastic pot is best as it doesn't dry out as quickly.  When you unpot you plant, check for any mushy roots and remove them as they are dead.  Soak your fresh orchid potting mix before use and return to your window sill.  Water once per week.  The fresh potting mix should give your plant the boost it needs.
