Answer
Jillian, there are several issues here and I will take them separately. It is not unusual for the older leaves (one's nearest the bottom of the plant) to yellow and fall off.  These are the oldest.  However, I'm always concerned about the root condition of plants recently obtained.  I recommend that you obtain a bag of orchid potting mix.  After you have obtained it, soak a portion of it while you are unpotting your plant.  Rinse off the roots of your plant and you will probably find roots that are mushy-- these are dead and need to be removed before repotting.  Healthy roots are firm.  Because you have new leaf growth, you will find some new root growth supporting the new leaves.  Try not to damage these new roots.  Repot your plant in the soaked potting mix and let it drain. Tamp the bottom of the pot to settle the new potting mix about the roots and set aside to drain.  Withhold watering for a week.  Place in an east window if you have one.

The stem (which is the old flower spike) naturally turns yellow and then brown. You may remove it if you wish. Any new, future flowering, will come from the base of the plant.  First concentrate on establishing strong new roots that will support new leaves. The yellowing leaves will be lost because roots supporting those leaves have rotted. It is always a good practice to repot newly acquired phalaenopsis ans repot them annually.
