QuestionI have an orchid that I purchased two months ago. I'm dealnig with a fungal spot issue, but my leaves are also very dry and shriveled. I plan on repotting "Nero" this weekend, but I'm worried that he may suffer unduely because his leaves are not the juicy succulent type leaves I've seen in pictures.
AnswerAngela, it sounds like you have a problem with your roots. When roots serving one or more leaves rot, the leaves will do what you describe. It is highly unlikely that the leaves that are shriveled will ever recover. They are likely to turn yellow and fall off from the plant.
When you repot with orchid potting mix, you are providing a favorable environment at the roots to develop new roots and leaves. That will take several months. When you unpot your plant, wash the roots off and you will probabaly find roots that are mushy and have collapsed. They are dead and need to be removed before repotting. If the fungal spot is on shriveled leaves, don't be concerned. This is an adventitous infectition taking advantage of weak leaves. It will disappear once the leaves fall from the plant.
