cascading cymbidium

Question
Hi Jim,

I bought a blooming cymbidium last year. It is a white cascading called Sarah Jean. I have at least 7 spikes this year but my problem is the spikes are growing upright instead of cascading towards the bottom.

I live in Hayward, Ca and I have it hanging near a persimmon tree, therefore gets dappled sunlight.

Any idea why?

Thanks,

Alma

Answer
Hi Alma,

It may be that the spikes will begin to turn downward as it gets longer and due to the weight of the buds and as they open.  Some of mine do that, grow slightly upright then start leaning over.  In addition, some growers will try forcing the spike to grow downward earlier by mechanically making it grow that direction, making it appear it is a pendulous spike rather than cascading.

You're doing a great job growing it with 7 spikes!!!  Keep up the good work.
