QuestionI have been cutting back the stems after the blooms have finished and have
just read that new blooms can grow on the same spike. Is this for all species
or just some? I have a mix of orchids, no cymbidiums. Should I cut any of the
spike back after flowering?
AnswerVery few orchids will rebloom on the same spike. It is most common on phalaenopsis orchids. However, whether or not a phalaenopsis spike will rebloom depends upon the hybrid. On some phalaenopsis hybrids, the flower spike will die back after blooming. Each phalaenopsis flower spike has a series of bumps or nodes along its length. If it's flower spike remains green after flowering, you should cut it off just above a node and you may get a branch of the flower spike that can result in new buds and flowers.
