QuestionWould you be able to recommend a website and books which might offer information on identifying orchids? Being a novice (only 11 orchids) I really need something to help me identify orchids by their foliage as well as their flowers. I have several Phals, several Den./Phals. (?), what I think may be a Cattelya and a Zygopetalum - Sunflower.
I'm fearful that I've emotionally committed to caring for these 'heart stoppers' before learning enough about them!!!
HELP! I've fallen and I can't stop adopting!
AnswerOne website you could try is the American Orchid Society (AOS) website. One section of their website contains sketches of the common orchids and culture information on how to grow them. Just google AOS. Treat this opportunity as a learning experience. The types of orchids you have mentioned have very different growing requirements. One of the better books I can recommend is "Home Orchid Growing" by Rebecca Tyson Northen. This is published by Prentice Hall. But, there are many good books and any garden center that sells orchids or supplies should have a few. Also, your local library may have some. You also may google the specific type of orchid you want more information about (eg Cattleya) and you will have many articles to choose from. If your plants have come with a tag that has the plant name on it that can also be helpful.
You may live in an area with a local orchid society. Google the "Orchid Mall" and check under orchid societies for your area. A good way to learn is to join a local orchid society. At those meetings you will find a lot of enthusiasm and information that should be helpful.
