markers in orchid pots that you buy.

Question
Hi,
I was wondering what the week number and month day and year mean on the markers.Thank You.

Answer
Hi Lisa,

Numbers on an orchid label could mean a variety of things depending upon the original grower.  Some growers like to note the date it was last repotted, others like to keep track of the date it initiated the bloom cycle while others the date it was in full bloom.  Additionally, some growers like to keep track of all of these dates.  There may be other significances to the dates, but the ones above are the usual reasons.  By the way, if it is a new hybrid orchid from the person who hybridized it, numbers could also be their code for the hybrid sequence in their breeding program but these numbers are usually prefaced with the breeder or nursery initials.

One purpose for noting dates on a label is so the grower can instantly tell when it is time to report (1, 2 or 3 year intervals depending upon the orchid and potting media) or when it was last in bloom.

Hope this answered your question.  Look at those numbers again and see if they make more sense with the above information.
